Please protest Denmark's use of Bearskin Hats. Save the Black Bears. One petition, one sample letter

The Danish Monarchy is one of the oldest in the world and keeps holding on to old traditions.
One of these traditions is the Danish Royal Guards. This guards wears hats made of fur from endangered black bears.

In Copenhagen, lies a famous old amusement park called Tivoli which is designed as an adventure garden with reference to Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales.
In the park there is a miniature castle with a King and a Queen and a guard consisting of children. This guard, dating back to 1901, is known as the Tivoli Boy Guard and is basically a children's version of the Danish Royal Guards. These children are dressed like the Danish Royal Guards and also wear hats of bear fur.

Presently there are no indications that the Canadian black bear can look forward to more peaceful times. As the Royal Family's own guards have no intensions to change their main ornamental, namely their bearskin hats.
Canada is a supplier of these bears. The bears are hunted by cruel and painful methods. In addition, the killing of black bears for their skin also leaves several bear cubs orphaned. Unable to defend themselves and survive on their own.  Please watch this video to see how the killing takes place:
ONE HAT = ONE BEAR

To Whom it may concern
It has come to our attention that, despite protestation from global collective encouraging otherwise and demonstrative evidence establishing profound cruelty, you let children in the Tivoli Boys Guard wear bearskin hats made of threatened black bears.
Please allow us this opportunity to elaborate.
All animals possess sentience, the capacity for thought and emotion, and the ability to experience discomfort, love, fear, and pain.
It is the communication distinction of such that human animals exploit to validate the suffering of non-human animals. Indeed, if an animal could speak a human-based language, for example, would you be capable of diminishing his worth to a commodity or resource to merely satisfy your desire?
To excuse using manipulated language, religion, or tradition, though, only favours humans in egotistical and immoral manners: defining an act as justifiable creates equality for only one species, only the victim of such acts can grant true justice, however.
Please watch this video and see what terrible suffering the bears undergo before they die.
In addition, the killing of black bears for their skin also leaves several bear cubs orphaned. Unable to defend themselves and survive on their own.
We ask you earnestly to use synthetic material for hats, which also is more comfortable for the children.
Please don’t let children be unconscious contributes to extreme and unnecessary cruelty.
Thank you for your attention to this important issue
Sincerely,
Name and Country

(Please feel free to write your own letter. It often has the greatest effect)

In Canada, black bears are considered as both a big game and furbearer species in all provinces save for New Brunswick and Northwest Territories, where they are only classed as a big game species. There are currently 80,822 licensed black bear hunters in all of Canada. Canadian black bear hunts take place in autumn and winter, and both male and female bears can be legally taken, though some provinces prohibit the hunting of females with cubs, or yearling specimens.

Reply from the Royal Danish Life Guards:

The Royal Danish Life Guards use headpieces made out of bearskin. The hide used for the caps is produced from the pelt of the black bear. The current cap is called model 1850 and, previously, the cap has gone through many stages of development with different shapes and degrees of fur covering. Thus, the Royal Danish Life Guards have used bearskin for headwear for more than 200 years.

For many years now, pelts from the Canadian black bear (Ursus Americanus) have been used. The black bear lives in the wild and the population is being monitored and regulated locally by biologists and forestry authorities. The efforts to regulate and maintain a healthy and sustainable population entails the issuing of annual permissions to kill a relevant number in different areas. The number of issued permissions is based on an annual count. Like any hunting in the civilised world, the hunting season is ethically adjusted so that the killing of females with small cubs is not allowed.

The bears are killed by being shot. Leg hold traps are no longer used and have not been used for many years since they ruin the hides and, consequently, the payment that the hunters receive for the hides will be less. Naturally, the hunters are interested in making as much money as possible for their product.

Pretty much everything on the killed bear is used. The meat is a great and popular delicacy, and the hides are scraped and coarsely tanned, after which they are gathered into lots and sold on fur auctions in Canada. Obviously, the demand for fur varies from year to year but for many years, the population has been stable and on the increase. The fur is a mere by-product of the population regulation. It is only used for bearskin caps and is only in demand for this sole purpose in England and Denmark. The fur is not useable in the clothing industry as it is too heavy and long-haired. If it was not for the demand for bearskin for caps, the fur would most likely be destroyed as the processing is expensive and there is only this limited usage.

The black bear is on the list of critically endangered animals and plants in the “Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES)”, often referred to as the Washington Convention. This is an international convention that regulates the import and export as well as trade and use of critically endangered animal and plant species. In Denmark, the convention is administered by the Danish Nature Agency. All imports and exports are inspected twice to trace their origins by the customs authorities, and only pelts that have been legally bagged are allowed across national borders. Furthermore, the usage of the bearskins has been approved by the World Wildlife Found WWF.

Thus, the Royal Danish Life Guards only use pelts which in a completely legal manner are the result of the efforts to continue to develop a healthy and sustainable bear population in the country of origin. One might even argue that by purchasing the pelts, we help support a healthy and sustainable bear population. It is ecology and sustainable handling of nature’s resources to the greatest possible extent!

In the 70s, the population was low and experiments with synthetic bearskin were conducted. However, the experiment had to be abandoned since the caps looked peculiar, to put it mildly; several guards experienced headaches during use; the fur collapsed when it rained; and in addition static electricity occurred.

In recent years, militant animal welfare organisations have repeatedly attempted to put pressure on Danish Defence and the Royal Danish Life Guards to give up the use of bearskin. This takes place by way of different campaigns and happenings, where reasoning and rhetoric at best show an obvious ignorance of the real situation. Emotional sceneries of animal abuse are depicted, which might possibly still actually take place in desolate corners of the world, but which are very far from the reality that “our” bears have experienced.

Yours sincerely,
Peter

Facts are:
1. Spring bear hunting is legal in all provinces of Canada except Ontarion, meaning that females are shot generating dozens of orphaned cubs each year that require rehab when legal. In those provinces were it isn't legal the cubs are killed by the government

2. Bear baiting stations is legal in all provinces. They work by tempting bears into places where they would normally not go and then they are shot by hunters.

3. All parts of the bears are not used - most bears are killed by trophy hunters. Most people don't eat bear meat and it is not considered a delicacy in Canada.

Mother bear kills cub and then itself - Please take action

The Chinese media has reported on an extraordinary account of a mother bear saving her cub from a life of torture by strangling it and then killing itself.
The bears were kept in a farm located in a remote area in the North-West of China. The bears on the farm had their gall bladders milked daily for 'bear bile,' which is used as a remedy in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
It was reported that the bears are kept in tiny cages known as 'crush cages', as the bears have no room to manoeuvre and are literally crushed.
The bile is harvested by making a permanent hole or fistula in the bears' abdomen and gall bladder.
As the hole is never closed, the animals are suspect to various infections and diseases including tumours, cancers and death from peritonitis.
The bears are fitted with an iron vest, as they often try to kill themselves by hitting their stomach as they are unable to bear the pain.
A person who was on the farm in place of a friend witnessed the procedures and told Reminbao.com that they were inhumane.
The witness also claimed that a mother bear broke out its cage when it heard its cub howl in fear before a worker punctured its stomach to milk the bile.
The workers ran away in fear when they saw the mother bear rushing to its cub's side.
Unable to free the cub from its restraints, the mother hugged the cub and eventually strangled it.
It then dropped the cub and ran head-first into a wall, killing itself.

Many TCM practitioners have denounced the use of bear bile in their treatment as there are cheaper herbs and synthetics that can be used in its place.
Bear bile is traditionally used to remove 'heat' from the body as well as treat high fever, liver ailments and sore eyes.

 The Bear Bile Business

PETITIONS:

SAMPLE LETTER

Dear Sir/Madame,

I am shocked and saddened to learn that a mother bear saving her cub from a life of torture by strangling it and then killing itself.

The bears were kept in a farm located in a remote area in the North-West of China. The bears on the farm had their gall bladders milked daily for 'bear bile,' which is used as a remedy in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

It is commonly acknowledged that the bear farming industry is extremely cruel, causing great suffering to the bears and confining them lifelong to small cages, resulting in very serious physical and psychological damage and ultimately an agonising death.

I have also learned with great sadness that China still allows the existence of the bear farming industry. This industry and its cruel practices have caused and will continue to cause damage in the international community to the reputation and image of Traditional Chinese Medicine and of China and the Chinese people, a stain on their standing.

Therefore, I urge you to take this into account and close all the farms.
I respectfully request you to consider the issues I have raised and my concerns. Thank you.

Yours sincerely,

The Asian black bear (Ursus thibetanus), also known as the Moon bear or White-chested bear is a medium-sized species of bear, largely adapted for arboreal life, which occurs through much of southern Asia, Korea, northeastern China, the Russian far east and Honshū and Shikoku islands of Japan. It is classed by the IUCN as a vulnerable species, mostly due to deforestation and active hunting for its body parts. The species is morphologically very similar to some prehistoric bears, and is thought by some scientists to be the ancestor of other extant bear species. Though largely herbivorous, Asian black bears can be very aggressive toward humans, and have frequently attacked people without provocation. The species was described by Rudyard Kipling as "the most bizarre of the ursine species.

Bile bear, or battery bear, refers to Asiatic black bears kept in captivity in China and Vietnam to harvest bile, a digestive juice produced by the liver and stored in the gall bladder. When extracted, the bears’ bile is a valuable commodity for sale as an ingredient in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The bears are also known as moon bears because of the cream-colored crescent moon shape on their chest. The Asiatic black bear, the one most commonly used on bear farms, is listed as vulnerable on the World Conservation Union's (IUCN's) Red List of Threatened Animals.

The Room rate for the reopening of hunting wolves

With a vote passed in silence, the Chamber's Agriculture Committee has unanimously approved a Bill which allows the killing of wolves. The horrible ragion di stato of this umpteenth barbaric isimportant to prevent damage to livestock".

Katya the bear, star of 1980 Moscow Olympics, now lives neglected life in rusty cage in parked bus

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia -- For two years, a 36-year-old bear who performed during the 1980 Moscow Olympics has been kept with other retired circus animals in a rusty old bus parked on the outskirts of St. Petersburg.
Animal rights activists say they receive only minimal care in their cramped and stinking cages.
Katya the bear was a longtime star of the Big St. Petersburg State Circus on Fontanka, where night after night she and another bear delighted children by riding motorcycles around the ring.
During the 1980 Summer Games, the bears were applauded by thousands at a ceremony opening the football competition in St. Petersburg, then called Leningrad. Katya also performed in two movies released in the 1980s.

Since her retirement in 2009, Katya and the painted bus on which she once toured with the circus have not left a parking lot near a busy highway. The aging bear spends the long hours jumping up and down in her cage and trying to crack the rusty metal railings with her chipped and yellowed teeth.
Dozens of other retired circus animals also live in the smelly cages placed inside the bus and a minivan parked nearby.
Some occasionally are taken out to accompany photographers to downtown St. Petersburg to have their pictures taken with children and tourists. Others never get washed or examined by veterinarians, animal rights activists say.
"They can't move normally and start going crazy," Zoya Afanasyeva of the Vita animal rights group said as she stood by Katya's sweltering bus on a hot summer day.
"Apparently they are being taken care of, but not more often than once a day, and this care is perfunctory because the smell here in the parking lot is unbearable," Afanasyeva said.

Klava the bear shares a small cage with Pasha the boar. Birds with atrophied muscles live next to cats that don't meow and stare straight ahead with pus-covered eyes.
Circus director Viktor Savrasov said the animals are cared for and Katya's fate would have been worse if her trainer had agreed to have the bear put to sleep.
"Whatever happened, she did not leave her," he said of retired trainer Natalya Arkhipova, who still visits Katya to feed her.
Animal rights activists have long urged Russia's government to strengthen animal protection laws.

Petitions:
http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/624/400/028/

SAMPLE LETTER:

Dear Sir/Madame,

I am writing today to encourage you to relinquish the Olympic Bear Of St. Petersburg Circus and the other circus animals languishing in cages on a bus to sanctuary. These non-human animals have been subjected to enslavement, imprisonment, forced to endure inadequate space, inferior medical treatment and care, lack of companionship, and involuntary training, made to perform tricks and have pictures taken with ignorant audiences. Although you may assert that humane protocols are observed, the visual evidence validates the position that this care is ignored in favor of profit.

As the result of a more attentive and compassionate group, individuals comprising a large global audience concerned with these animals have been respectfully offering medical evidence establishing the debilitating natures to which these animals are exposed. Sadly, however, apparent greed and indifference have resulted in their deteriorating mental and physical states.

I hope you make the compassionate decision to discontinue your imprisonment of them and reject complicity in the unethical industry that profits from their suffering.

Thank you for your attention to this important issue; I hope you extend an ethical and empathetic gesture to release these non-human animals to sanctuary.

Sincerely,

Answer from IFAW:

"The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) is not in possession of this bear. We have seen pictures of Katya, and it makes us sick to see any animal held in such disgusting conditions. Although there are laws against keeping animals this way in Moscow, there are no such regulations in St. Petersburg, so the "caretakers" of this bear are seen as doing nothing wrong. IFAW Supporter Relations "

Very sad.  IFAW has several successful bear projects in Russia but, regrettably, we are not working in St. Petersburg, nor are we able to mount a campaign for every deserving animal welfare issue, although we wish we could. We must focus our energies and our resources on the anti-cruelty campaigns available for you to see on our website. That is the way we feel we can do the most good for the animals.
A group that focuses on circus animals around the world is Animal Defenders International:
http://www.ad-international.org/adi_world/. You may want to contact them about their work.
You may also be interested in a web site called World Animal Net (http://worldanimal.net/) - it contains a directory of animal welfare organizations in most countries. You may find a group working in St. Petersburg that may be able to help.

We sincerely regret that we cannot be of more assistance.

Ronnie O'Connor

Report from Vita one of the organisations working to try to improve animal welfare in Russia:

“Situation around the female bear Katya draws a wide response not only in Russia, but worldwide too.

We, Animal Rights Center ‘Vita’,get a great number of responses and questions about this situation. Here is a brief report about the situation and its progress. We’ve received a video about one of Saint-Petersburg’s car park. At the car park in several vans were imprisoned female bears Katya and Klava and a pig Pasha.

Unlike other animals Katya is a famous bear. She was at the Sain-Petersburg Olympic Games Opening in 80th. This fact was one of the main reason why the case has so wide response. We’ve found an animal shelter near Saint-Petersburg. Administration of the shelter offer a place for Katya. But bear’s owner rejected this possibility. Motivation of this decision was simple. Bear live in similar conditions for 37 years and got accustomed to them. Change of the setting may lead to a stress and further death. Besides of this only skilled human must look after dangerous animals. There is no such man in the shelter and the owner refuses from everyday trips to the shelter. Russian legislation has no law about animal rights protection and the owner may do with the animal whatever she wants. Klava and Pasha are still in business. They participate in the shows at the circus and they are used in photo business at the Fontanka Circus. They bring money to the owner and their resettlement to the animal shelter is don’t considered by the owner.

There are multitude of circus in Russia and there are more than 15 000 animals in the system. And all of them live in the same conditions or worst. But people don’t know about this. Circus are hiding information about animals trainings and living conditions. They show to the public only a result of the torture but never torture. And lots of the people don’t pay their attention on this problem.

One of our aims is to bring to the society information about using and keeping animals in circus. Other aim is to create a legislation about animals rights. This law exists as the project since 1998 but it still not accepted. We want Russia to be like other civilized countries in which circuses with animals are prohibited.

You can to influence on the Russian government by the creating appropriate public opinion outside Russia. You can send information to a newspaper or TV. You can write note in your blog. And you can write a letter to the Russian government, to the Russian president Medvedevor to the Premier Putin. Also you can support animal shelter “BIM” in which live former circus animals in particular. Now we are trying to send there a lioness saved from a circus.”

Answer from WSPA
With regard to the welfare issues of bears in St. Petersburg, Russia, Vita Animal Rights Centre, Russia ( http://www.vita.org.ru/english/english.htm ) has a petition for people to sign here: http://www.change.org/petitions/save-russias-olympic-bear-of-st-petersburg-circus Several organisations are also urging people to write to the Russian Embassy in their country, and guidelines can be found here: http://ourcompass.wordpress.com/2011/08/03/russias-olympic-bear-of-st-petersburg-circus-kept-caged-on-parked-bus-please-send-sample-letter-sign-petition/
WSPA has repeatedly complained to the mayor about the treatment of bears in St. Petersburg and about other issues related to bears in Russia to the Russian authorities, but these complaints have not been addressed.
